Cornell researchers lead on turning DNA into biodegradable gels and plastics
Biofuels Digest

In New York state, Cornell-led collaboration is turning DNA from organic matter—such as onions, fish and algae—into biodegradable gels and plastics. The resulting materials could be used to create everyday plastic objects, unusually strong adhesives, multifunctional composites and more effective methods for drug delivery, without harming the environment the way petrochemical-based materials do.
Deep Earth structures may reveal location of untapped base metal deposits
MINING.com

Researchers from the United States and Australia have discovered previously unrecognized structural lines 100 miles or more down in the Earth that appear to signal the locations of giant deposits of copper, lead, and zinc. The metals, however, lie close enough to the surface to be mined, but too far down to be found using current exploration methods.
Australian researchers develop electrochemical oxidation process to clean wastewater
Biofuels Digest

In Australia, researchers from the University of Sydney’s School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering developed an electrochemical oxidation process with the aim of cleaning up complex wastewater that contained a toxic cocktail of chemical pollutants. The wastewater, which contained carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus, was generated in a pilot plant, designed by the team for the production of biofuels using naturally abundant microalgae.
Malaysia joins Indonesia’s WTO complaint against EU over palm oil
Biofuels Digest

In Malaysia, Reuters reports the government will act as a third party in Indonesia’s existing complaint against the European Union for its trade practices against palm oil. Malaysia has been threatening such a complaint for well over a year while the European Union has remained confident that it would win should a complaint be brought against the trade bloc. The EU has decided to phase out the use of palm oil in biofuel by 2030 in an effort to battle deforestation related to oil palm farming.

Renewable diesel expanding with petroleum-to-renewable refinery conversions
Biofuels Digest

Possibly the most famous line in Dirty Dancing, you can’t put baby in a corner and that’s certainly the case lately with renewable diesel. Some still look at renewable diesel as just a baby considering the first commercial renewable diesel facility starting running in 2010. But there is a huge transformation happening with growth in the conversion of petroleum refineries to renewable diesel.
Why is the manual transmission going extinct in Malaysia? Because so few of us are buying them
Paul Tan’s Automotive

I pondered the question above when I recently decided to buy a simple car with a manual transmission. Basic safety equipment was a must for me (ABS and stability control at the very minimum), so the manual Perodua Bezza and Axia and Proton Saga were immediately out of the question, as they were all only available in base spec – no ESP on the Bezza and Saga, and not even ABS on the driving school-spec Axia.

The MCO was soon replaced by the conditional MCO in May, followed by the recovery MCO that is currently in effect from June 10 until August 31.
